Brief Description of Source:
The two pictures are from my old school Glen Elementary and West Scott Elementary School. I went to Coquitlam when I was in 4th grade second semester and attended Glen Elementary School until I was in 5th grade. Then, I had to move to North Vancouver due to some issue. One of the picture is when I was in 7th grade and it was a photo day. The other picture, I was in a girl's basketball team. The yearbook is also from the same school I was in seventh grade. Lastly, the scrapbook at the top of the pictures, my friends did a surprise party for me and they gave me a scrapbook as a present to remember the past. They wanted to me to continue the scrapbook to put pictures and memory in Korea.
Source Type:
All of the pictures are primary source because the photos were taken at the school,by myself and friends. The place and the events were taken by at the school .Also, the interview is primary source since she is connected with the events and I interviewed her. The secondary source is my old school's address where it has all the information and the background of the school. It shows how my school life was different from these two schools.
Short Explanation of the source's significance to the event:
The yearbook is very important to me because it shows everything about my life at school or how my school was like.Since it was so long ago, I can't remember some of the parts or events that happened. Then, I could look into the yearbook and refresh my memory of the past.It also shows that I had done various activities in school and how the education goes around. It brings back my memory what kind of student I was back then. I keep in touch with some of my friends even though it had been a long time since we saw each other. The most significance would be that even though we don't live in the same country anymore, I can still contact my friends and know how they are doing.
Written recount of the event:
Around Christmas in 2006, my family and I packed our things and went to Canada for studying. At first, I couldn't speak English at first but as time passed by it got better and better. At Glen school, I was able to learn how to speak English and to make friends that weren't korean. In 2007, I moved to North Vancouver where Westcot School was. At there, I had an opportunity to try several activities such as basketball, volleyball, cross country and others.Gradually, when I joined these kinds of activities I had a chance to meet lots of friends and get to know each other. Although, each of us are from different countries we understood each other and had an amazing time. I could be more socialized and able to have a bit of confidence that I didn't have. I continued to study in Canada for four years and when I turned into grade 8, I came back to Korea permanently and started to attend Korea International School.I was lucky enough to meet good friends and teachers in KIS. My turning point was when I came to Korea International School. If it wasn't for Canada, I wouldn't be in the school enjoying my school year. I'm glad that it was Canada that I went for studying. If it wasn't for this country, I wouldn't be in this history class writing this. I could think back to my years back in Canada.
Interview: The interview were done in Korean but translated into English)
Interviewer: My mom
Me: Mom,may I interview about our life in Canada?
Mom: Sure! Anything you would like to know.
Me: So, why did we move to Canada? Mom: Well, your dad and I wanted to let you and your brother experience living in the new country and getting to know their languages and cultures.
Me: There’s lots of other countries that I could’ve gone to but why did you choose Canada? Mom:There's not a specific reason why your dad and I chose Canada. We really liked the environment and the surroundings.
Me: What were the advantages and disadvantages of moving to Canada? Mom: One of the advantages would be that we had an exceptional opportunity to learn English and other languages. There’s not much disadvantage that I can think of but if I had to choose one it would be when your dad had to stay behind in Korea because of his job. I'm pretty sure we all missed him when we stayed in Canada and same for him also.
Me: Do you think this had big effect on our family’s life? Mom: Of course, if we didn’t move to Canada, you guys wouldn’t be attending Korea International School and get to have those advantages you are getting right now.Not only you guys, it had a big effect on your dad and I also had a great chance to learn English!
